Kilgore Superlite TH400 Racing Transmission: A Must For Super Stock, Stock, Mustang 5.0 & Other Doorslammers

Sun Valley, CA: John Kilgore Racing Transmissions now offers the Superlite Turbo 400, an unmatched combination of strength and lightness. Super lightweight internals minimize parasitic loss to get more power to the ground. "Everything works quicker," John Kilgore says: “ETs, reaction times, 60-foots, quarter-miles. Racers regularly shave .2 to .5 seconds."

Kilgore minimizes rotating mass by combining the forward and direct clutch assembles in one housing. Compared to the stock 28-pound cast-iron assembly, the Superlite housing weights just 12 pounds; with aluminum "steels" it can weigh as little as 9 pounds. Because the moment of inertia is smaller, less energy is required to run the transmission. This frees up more power for acceleration -- the same reason why racers use the smallest possible front tires. "The closer you are to center, the less energy it takes to 'spin up' the transmission's parts," Kilgore says. "Lighter parts equal quicker starts."

Options include a choice of First gear ratios, a "deeper" Second gear and an aluminum valve-bodied transbrake. Kilgore's most popular Superlite TH400 combination is his Super 210. It includes a 2.10:1 First gearset, a 34-element sprag assembly, a Kilgore Pro Pump with exclusive regulator that runs about 170 psi in First and Second and 250 psi in Third (so the lightweight clutches will live), new seals, new rings, new bushings, a deep pan with drain plug and the Kilgore Pro transbrake. These guts raise the torque rating from the OE 550 lb-ft to approximately 900 lb-ft while cutting the rotating weight in half.
